Salim Idris

Selim Idriss (Arabic سلیم ادریس Salīm Idris, born 1957 ) is a former Syrian brigadier general. From December 2012 to February 2014 he was known as chief of staff of the opposition Free Syrian Army ( FSA), the position in Syria is not a de facto command itself.

As part of the military cooperation between Syria and the GDR Idriss studied electrical engineering in Dresden from 1984. He received his doctorate in 1990 at the University of Transportation on the subject Theoretical ( computer-aided ) and experimental investigation of problems of optimum sizing of RF transistor power amplifiers. He was returned to Syria professor at the Military Academy Aleppo and later a general in the regular Syrian army. In July 2012, he deserted during the Syrian civil war with the Free Syrian Army. In December of the same year he became chief of staff of the FSA.

On March 8, 2013 Idriss traveled to Brussels in order to advertise support for the FSA before the European Parliament. He secured Ghassan Hitto that on 18 March 2013 of the opposition Syrian National Coalition for the first Prime Minister of the " liberated areas " of Syria was elected, his support. He also advocated a possible Cabinet of the National Coalition.

On February 16, 2014 Idriss was replaced as commander in chief and replaced by Colonel Abdelilah al -Bashir. The step was justified by an ineffective leadership in recent months.
