Salinõmme ( German Sallinömm ) is a village (Estonian küla ) in the rural community Pühalepa ( Pühalepa vald ). It is the second largest Estonian island of Hiiumaa ( German Dagö ).

Description and History

Salinõmme today has 29 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011). It is located five kilometers south of Suuremõisa.

The village is situated on the peninsula ( Salinõmme pool saar ). To the east is the Bay of Salinõmme ( Salinõmme Laht ), west of the Book of Soonlepa ( Soonlepa Laht ). The juniper dominates the natural landscape. Even at the end of the 19th century, the peninsula was a small island that was finally joined by the natural elevation of the land with the island of Hiiumaa.

The place was first mentioned in documents in 1565 under the name Salomäe by. During the Swedish rule over Hiiumaa was recovered there from 1582 to 1594 sea salt - albeit on a modest scale, as the salt content is not very high. From the word " Saline" is also the name of the village derives.

Island Reserve Hiiumaa

In Salinõmme the administrative center is for the 1971 -made island sanctuary Hiiumaa. For ornithologists, an observation tower was erected. There is also a small fishing port in Salinõmme and a guest house.
