Sallèles-d'Aude

Sallèles- d'Aude is a commune with 2722 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) in the Aude department in the Languedoc- Roussillon region. It belongs to the district of Narbonne, for Canton Ginestas and community association Agglomà de la Narbonnese.

Geography

The community Sallèles- d'Aude is situated about ten kilometers north- west of Narbonne.

The municipal area extends along the lower reaches of the Cesse until its confluence with the Aude, which also forms the southern boundary of the municipality. Thanks to the northwest of the community leads the Canal du Midi, from the Canal de Jonction branches, which connects to the southeast towards the Aude. The Canal de Jonction lies entirely in the field of community - Sallèles d'Aude. The mostly flat terrain of the municipality is treeless except for the banks of the waters. In the vast plains and on the north- east to a maximum of 46 m above the sea rising hills wine is mainly cultivated.

To the municipality of the district of Truilhas counts with the same industrial area in the northwest. A special feature is the location of a crossing of the Canal du Midi village of Le Somail, the northernmost tip of one of Sallèles- d'Aude.

Neighboring communities of Sallèles- d'Aude are Ouveillan in the north, Cuxac -d'Aude in the east, Moussan in the south, Saint -Marcel- sur -Aude and Ginestas in the west and Mirepeisset and Argeliers in the northwest.

History

In 924 Sallèles first appears in a written source. However, the colonization of the area goes back much further, as the archaeological site Amphoralis occupied north of the core site. The now covered and opened in 1992 as a museum site shows pottery from Gallo-Roman period, based on the rich clay deposits in the area. The pottery tradition remained very long in Sallèles, its location near the Aude and later opened waterways Canal du Midi, Canal de Jonction and Canal de la Robine good transportation and trade opportunities for the clay products ( amphorae, bricks, tiles, clay pipes ), but also offered for wine. The high point of economic development reached Sallèles- d'Aude in the 19th century, when in place numerous Schiffer, lock keepers, craftsmen going about for the repair of inland vessels, fishermen and winemakers of their work.

Sallèles- d'Aude is an elementary school site.

About the neighboring communities Cuxac -d'Aude and Saint -Marcel- sur -Aude is connected to the junction of Narbonne (A 9 and A 61). Passenger traffic on the railway line opened in 1887 Narbonne- Sallèles- Bize has already been set in 1939.
