Salomé (artist)

Salomé ( born August 24, 1954 in Karlsruhe as Wolfgang Ludwig Cihlarz ) is a German artist.

Life

Wolfgang Ludwig Cihlarz grew up in Karlsruhe in a broken home and completed an apprenticeship as a draftsman. In 1973 he moved to West Berlin.

There he worked as an architectural draftsman, among others in the U.S. armed forces in Tempelhof and to DeTeWe. After passing the entrance exam, he studied at the University of the Arts ( University of Arts ): 1974-1980 painting with Ulrich Knipsel, later as a master student of Karl Horst Hödicke. Besides his studies he worked as a waiter in the club " Matalla " and " jungle " or the cafe " Other banks ". Its owner, Gerhard Hoffmann, whom he had met in 1973 in the homosexual Action West Berlin. Hoffmann invented in 1973 the pseudonym Salomé. In the "other shore " learned Salomé et al David Bowie know who was living in Berlin. In this phase, Salomé was associated with Rainer Fetting.

In 1977, Salomé, together with his fellow artists Helmut Middendorf, Bernd Zimmer, Rainer Fetting, Anne Jud, Berthold Schepers, Rolf Bergmann and others, the " Gallery at Moritz place". Later guests / members joined, such as Hella Santa Rossa and Luciano Castelli. With Castelli 1980 he founded the punk band Geile Tiere (New Wave), which had its origin in the dance club "jungle" and also appeared live there in the 1980s. Along with artists such as Rainer Fetting, Helmut Middendorf, Bernd Zimmer, Elvira Bach, Luciano Castelli and Jiří Georg Dokoupil Salomé was known as a representative of the New Wild or even the young and wild now. Invited by Rudi Fuchs 1982 he took part in the art exhibition "documenta 7" in Kassel, which he eventually international breakthrough.

Salomé started a commuter lives between New York and Berlin. He portrayed many VIPs such as Princess Gloria von Thurn und Taxis and he is also portrayed by famous photographers such as Helmut Newton himself. After a long stay in America, he came back to Berlin in 1999, and revived his studio on the premises of the former gallery space at Moritz. Through the cooperation with famous porcelain manufacturers, including Rosenthal, originated painted sculptures and table place settings. Nowadays Salomé's paintings hang in museums and private collections. Among the most famous cycles include the colorful floats and water lilies. There are also series with neutral celebrity portraits as well as explicitly gay issues. Recently he published again own punk music CDs and occasionally he performs as a singer. Regularly he is involved in charity projects.

Salomé lives and works in Berlin.
