Salyan, Azerbaijan
Salyan is a city in Azerbaijan. It is the capital of the district of Salyan. In the city there were over 37,900 inhabitants.
Geography
Salyan is located on the river Kura.
History
The city was 1729-1789 capital of the Khanate of Salyan, which then was part of the Khanate of Quba. From 1806 it belonged to the Russian Empire. In Salyan the POW camp consisted of 442 German prisoners of war of World War II.
Economy and Transport
The city lies on the Azerbaijani highway M3 and is connected to the railway network in the country.
Culture
There is a historical museum.
