Sâmbăta de Sus

Sâmbăta de Sus (deprecated Sâmbăta Răsăriteană; German Upper Mill Village, Hungarian Felsőszombatfalva ) is a municipality in the district of Brasov in Transylvania, Romania.

The place is also known by the German names Obersambata and upper Sombath and the Hungarian Keletifelsőszombatfalva and Szombatfalva.

Description

The agrarian village located 6 km south of the river Olt (Alt ) and European Route 68 as well as 18 km from the town of Fagaras ( Fagaras ) away. The population lives mostly from agriculture and animal husbandry. Many residents commute to the industrial enterprises of Fagaras and Victoria. A major employer is also the company SC Gouda Gold SRL, which operates a factory for the production of cheese in the community. In addition, tourism plays a significant role, especially through the monastery located in the southern part of the municipality to which some hotels and pensions emerged in recent years.

History

Sâmbăta de Sus was first mentioned in 1437 and was for a long time in the direct ownership of various boyars. Especially the family Brâncoveanu shaped the history of the village. In the eastern part of the municipality also the manor of Brâncoveanu family is obtained.

The municipality consists of the village Sâmbăta de Sus and the south of it the climatic health resort Statiunea Climaterică Sâmbăta, in which the well-known Orthodox monastery Sâmbăta de Sus is located. Originally Sâmbăta de Sus belonged to the municipality Voila, but was spun off in 2003 and raised as a separate parish.

The trading is limited to several small grocery stores. The village has a kindergarten and a primary school ( scoala generală ).
