Sammlung für Völkerkunde

The Ethnographic Collection of the University of Göttingen (including collection of Ethnology ) at the Institute of Ethnology at the Georg- August -Universität Göttingen is an important ethnological institute in Germany. Agency is the State of Lower Saxony.

The naturalist Johann Friedrich Blumenbach brought in the 18th century, the Cook -Forster collection and the collection of Baron von Asch to Göttingen. Hans Hermann Plischke 1926 was entrusted with the preparation of the Ethnological collection. In 1933, the " Department of Ethnology and Ethnographic Collection" set.

The independent Institute with Museum could open first time in 1936, but remained closed to the public again and again. The exhibition area is now about 300 m² on two floors, the collection contains approximately 17,000 items. On 6 February 2000 the permanent exhibition was reopened and is open on Sundays for visitors.

Focuses on the South Seas with the Cook -Forster Collection (Hawaii, Tahiti, Tonga and New Zealand) as well as Siberia and the Arctic region with the Baron von Asch collection.
