Sammy Fain

Sammy Fain ( born June 17, 1902 in New York; † December 6, 1989 Los Angeles, Sam E. Fain, born as Samuel Feinberg ) was an American musical and film composer. He collaborated with EY Harburg, Sammy Cahn and Paul Francis Webster.

Life and work

Sammy Fain was one of the composers of popular music that would become known as the Great American Songbook. After high school, Fain worked as a pianist for the music company of Irving Mills. During this time, his first song he wrote with Al Dubin, " Nobody Knows What a Red Head Mamma Can Do " was born. Then he made with Irving Kahal a songwriting team. Both went to Hollywood, where she worked in the studios of Paramount Pictures and Warner Brothers. Together wrote Fain and Kahal many classic songs such as "Let a Smile Be Your Umbrella" and "When I Take My Sugar to Tea" ( 1931). Their collaboration lasted until Irving Kahal 's death in 1942 Fain also worked with Lew Brown.; they wrote " That Old Feeling " (1938).

For the Broadway Fain wrote for several musicals and revues, the revues Hellzapoppin 1938 and Sons o 'Fun were the most successful of 1941. From the failed 1938er musical Right This Way, which hits " I'll Be Seeing You" and come " I Can Dream, Can not I? ".

Fain composed throughout his career the music for over 30 films during the 1930s, '40s and '50s. He was also nominated in the category of Best Original Song nine times for an Oscar. He won it twice, with the song " Secret Love " from the Western musical severity Colts in tender hand (1953) and with the later jazz standard " Love Is a Many- Splendored Thing" from the film of 1955. Both songs wrote he with his longtime partner, the lyricist Paul Francis Webster. Fain also wrote the songs for some of Walt Disney cartoons such as " I'm Late " for Alice in Wonderland (Alice in Wonderland, 1951), Peter Pan (Peter Pan, 1953) and Bernard and Bianca - The Rescuers ( The Rescuers, 1977).

1963 Fain collaborated with Harold Adamson; they wrote the songs for the film The Incredible Mr. Limpet (1964 ); also he wrote such songs as "I wish I Were A Fish ", " Be Careful How You Wish" and "Deep Rapture ".

Fain died in Los Angeles and is at the Cedar Park Cemetery, Emerson, buried New Jersey.

Fain was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
