The Samoan language belongs to the Polynesian branch of the Austronesian language family and is in conjunction with, for example, Tuvaluan, Tokelauisch and the languages ​​of many Polynesian enclaves of the subgroup Samoische languages. It is the official language in Samoa and American Samoa.

Sound system and pronunciation

The Samoan sound system contains 15 phonemes: the vowels / a, e, i, o, u / and the consonants / f, g, l, m, n, p, s, t, v /. To indicate that a vowel should be pronounced long, a macron is placed over the vowel: ā, ē, ī, ō, ū. In foreign words are also used . The sounds generally correspond to their German counterparts.
