Sampigny

Sampigny is a commune in the Meuse department in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district COMMERCY and Canton Pierrefitte- sur -Aire. The village has 737 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011).

Geography

Sampigny located on the Meuse between COMMERCY and Saint- Mihiel at an altitude 221-350 m above sea level, the average height is 227 m. The municipality covers 20.53 km ² ( 2,053 ha), and the population density is 38 inhabitants per km ².

Culture and sights

Other attractions include the ruins of the castle, which was built around 1630 by the architect Jacques Labrosse for Louis de Guise, supposedly according to the plans of the Palais du Luxembourg in Paris. The castle was destroyed in the First World War. Furthermore, there is the small Château du Clos, in the Raymond Poincaré spent his twilight years. Today, located in the Château, the museum Raymond Poincaré.

  • Lucia from the mountain († 1090 ), medieval hermit, Catholic saints.
  • Louis de Guise, Baron of Ancerville, Lord of Sampigny, builder of the castle, is buried in the church of Sainte -Lucie.
  • The former French President Raymond Poincaré spent his life in Sampigny.
