Sämtisersee

The Sämtisersee is like the Fälensee and Seealpsee a lake in the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden in Alpsteinmassiv at the foot of the Hoher Kasten. It lies at an altitude of about 1'209 m.

The lake has a subterranean outlet, its water comes back to the surface in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley. In hot dry summers, the lake dries out almost completely. The main tributary, the Sämtiserbach unable to run enough water at such times.

The name is derived from the name of the adjacent Alp Sämtis, occupied since the 15th century ( Zemptis alp, alp Zemtis, Alp Sämtis ). This seems ultimately to be identical with the mountain name Santis.
