Samtskhe - Javakheti (Georgian სამცხე - ჯავახეთი, Samtskhe Javakheti -; completely სამცხე - ჯავახეთის მხარე, Samtskhe - Dschawachetis Mchare ) is a newly created region in southern Georgia. It is bordered to the south by Turkey and Armenia. The capital is Akhaltsikhe. During the war in 1918 between the Democratic Republic of Armenia and Georgia, this region was one of the issues ( Lori and Marneuli ).

The region includes six municipalities ( munizipaliteti ), named after its administrative headquarters Akhalkalaki, Akhaltsikhe, Adigeni, Aspindza, Borjomi and Ninotsminda.

Together, the historical province of Javakheti form the areas around Akhalkalaki and Ninotsminda (English Javakheti ).

Population

The population in Samtskhe - Javakheti Armenians, more than half ( 54.4 %); nevertheless the Armenian language is not official language of the region. The proportion of ethnic Georgian population is 43 %. In addition, there also Russians and Ossetians live.

The population of the historic Javakheti is about 90% of Armenian- burly. A large part of the population can trace its origins to two waves of immigration, a smaller wave after the Russo -Turkish War 1828/29 and greater after the genocide, as well as the parallel expulsion of the Armenians from Turkey in 1915.
