Samuel Adler (rabbi)

Samuel Adler ( born December 3, 1809 in Worms, † June 9, 1891 in New York) was from 1842 to 1857 Rabbi of the Jewish community of Alzey. He was one of the protagonists of the liberal movement in German Judaism, and entered, for example, for the use of the German language in worship and a greater participation of women.

Life

He began his studies in 1831 at the University of Bonn and received his doctorate in philosophy in 1836 at the University of Giessen. Adler went 1856/1857 as a rabbi at Temple Emanu -El in the New York and was head of the leading Jewish Reform Congregation in the USA. The church held Samuel Adler further preferably in German. His library is largely preserved in Cincinnati Hebrew Union College.

He is the father of Felix Adler.
