Samuel Griffith (Pennsylvania)

Samuel Griffith ( born February 14, 1816 in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, † October 1, 1893 in Mercer, Pennsylvania ) was an American politician. Between 1871 and 1873 he represented the State of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

When exactly Samuel Griffith emigrated to the United States, is not known. He was initially taught by a private tutor and then completed the Allegheny College in Meadville. After a subsequent law degree in 1846 and its recent approval as a lawyer, he began to work in Mercer in this profession. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Democratic Party launched a political career.

In the congressional elections of 1870, Griffith was in the 20th electoral district of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of the Republican Calvin Willard Gilfillan on March 4, 1871. Since he has not been confirmed in 1872, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1873. After his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Griffith practiced again as a lawyer in Mercer, where he died on 1 October 1893.
