Samuel Montagu, 1st Baron Swaythling

Samuel Montagu, 1st Baron Swaythling ( born December 21, 1832 in Liverpool, † January 12, 1911 ) was a British banker and politician.

Life

Montagu founded the London bank Samuel Montagu & Co. and thereby came to power. From 1885 to 1900 he was a member of the House of Commons for the electoral district of Whitechapel in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. He belonged to the Liberals.

As an orthodox Jew living he was a leader of the British Jews in his time. He cared greatly about the religious and social situation of the Jewish immigrants in the UK, particularly in his constituency. Montagu promoted the Choveve Zion, including in 1893 by a petition to Sultan Abd ul- Hamid to allow Jewish settlements in Transjordan (together with Simeon Singer). Theodor Herzl's efforts towards he remained reserved and did not win for Zionism.

In 1894 he was a baronet, of Swaythling in the County of Southampton levied. 1907 was followed by the elevation to the peer as Baron Swaythling, of Swaythling in the County of Southampton.

Montague had married in 1862 Ellen Cohen. He died in 1911. His titles went to his eldest son Louis over. The liberal politician Herbert Samuel, 1st Viscount Samuel, was his nephew.
