Samuil Samosud

Samuil Abramovich Samossud (Russian Самуил Абрамович Самосуд, scientific transliteration Samuil Abramovich Samosud; * 2 Maijul / May 14 1884greg in Tbilisi, .. † November 6, 1964 in Moscow) was a Russian conductor.

He began his career as a cellist before he in 1917 became head of the Mariinsky Theatre in Petrograd. From 1918 to 1936 he directed the Maly Theatre in the same city, meanwhile, called Leningrad. In 1936 he became musical director at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. There he founded an orchestra from the 1951 eventually became the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra.

He brought several important world premieres, including the opera The Nose ( based on a story by Gogol ) and the Leningrad Symphony by Shostakovich and Prokofiev's opera War and Peace ( from the novel by Tolstoy ).
