San Bernardino Strait

Geographical location

The San Bernardino Strait is a strait between the Philippine island of Samar and the Bicol Peninsula, in the southeast of the largest Philippine island of Luzon.

It connects the Samar Sea to the southwest with the Philippine Sea to the northeast. At the narrowest point it is less than 20 km wide. In its south lie the islands Calintaan, Capul, Dalupiri and Burabud, in the northeast, among other Langub and San Bernardino Iceland. At the transition of the Samar Sea in the estuary are the Naranjo Islands.

1543 reached the expedition of Ruy López de Villalobos, the Philippines and sailed the San Bernardino Strait.

During World War II a Japanese fleet sailed through the strait on their way to battle off Samar as part of the air and sea battle of Leyte Gulf.
