San José del Golfo

San José del Golfo is a place in Guatemala and the administrative seat of the homonymous municipios in the department of Guatemala. The town is 28 kilometers northeast of Guatemala City.

The 84- km ² large municipality extends nordlöstichen mountains of the department of Guatemala at altitudes of around 1,000 meters. It has around 8,000 inhabitants. A majority of the people live in rural settlements and villages, including La Cholena, Loma Tendida, Pontezuelas, Quebrada de Agua, Las Joyas, Santa Cruz El Caulote, Los Encuentros de Navajas, Garibaldi, El Ranchón and El Javillal.

Adjacent Municipalities are Chuarrancho the northwest, San Pedro Ayampuc in the west and in the south of Palencia. In the north and east of the Río San José del Golfo Platanos and the Department of Guatemala separates from the municipios Sanarate and San Antonio La Paz in the neighboring department of El Progreso.

San José del Golfo in 1882 was elevated to municipality and belonged from 1908 to 1920 to El Progreso. The term " del Golfo " comes from the ancient highway that led from Guatemala City via San José del Golfo to Lake Izabal, which was formerly also known as Golfo Dulce. Today's Atlantic Highway CA 9 runs about 10 kilometers south of the town of San José del Golfo.
