San Jose Earthquakes

The San Jose Earthquakes are an American football franchise of the Major League Soccer ( MLS) from San Jose, California. The current franchise headquarters but is currently in Santa Clara, where the stadium is located. After the construction of a new stadium, the team will return to San Jose.

The Earthquakes played between 1996 and 2005 in Major League Soccer and returned for the 2008 season. So far they have twice the MLS Cup win and once the MLS Supporter 's Shield.

History

The roots of Earthquakes

Between 1974 and 1988 there was already a football club named San Jose Earthquakes. In 1974, the club in the North American Soccer League ( NASL ) was added. After the dissolution of the League in 1984, the team played in the Western Soccer League ( WSL) on. Four years later, the owner Peter Bridgewater sold the franchise. His successor, led the team into the financial abyss and the franchise was disbanded at season's end.

A year later, took the San Francisco Bay Blackhawks, this took over the license of the Earthquakes, the operation of gambling on the WSL. Owner of the club was Dan Van Voorhis. In 1991, the former Earthquakes player Laurie Calloway was coach of the team in which some later Earthquakes players had, among other things, John Doyle and Eric Wynalda. Major League Soccer (1996-2005)

Moving to Houston

Colours and Coat of Arms

From 1995 to 1999 the logo of San Jose Clash included a scorpion. After the change of name in 2000 the emblem was revised. The central element is the football, behind which the sun rises. Stadium

Between 1996 and 2005, the Earthquakes played in Spartan Stadium. The stadium is located on the campus of San Jose State University.

Since returning to the league the team plays in Buck Shaw Stadium. This stadium is located on the campus of Santa Clara University in Santa Clara ( California).

On 21 October 2012, the groundbreaking ceremony for a new stadium near the San Jose International Airport took place. The new stadium will hold 18,000 seats and be ready built in 2014. Originally a new stadium should be built with 22,000 seats right next to Spartan Stadium. The San José State University should provide the country during Lewis Wolff and John Fischer should finance the construction costs. The plans failed in April 2007, after the Earthquakes and the university could not agree on the distribution of income.

Fan groups of Earthquakes are: 1906 Ultras, Casbah, Club Quake and Soccer Silicon Valley.

Rivals

The biggest rival of Earthquakes is Los Angeles Galaxy. Since 1996, the teams play each season from the California Clasico. The victor emerges from the direct duels of the two during the regular season. Due to the rivalry is the geographical proximity of the two teams and the general sporting enmity between sports teams from Southern and Northern California.

With the CD Chivas USA is also a rivalry, but which is smaller.
