San José Pinula is a 11,000 inhabitants town in Guatemala and the administrative seat of the homonymous municipios in the department of Guatemala. The town located 22 kilometers southeast of Guatemala City is 1,752 m above sea level on the National Road 18, which leads from the capital city to Jalapa.

The 220- km ² large municipality extends in the southeastern highlands of the department of Guatemala. It has around 55,000 inhabitants, of which the majority live in rural settlements and villages, including Santa Inés Pinula, Cienega Grande, El Platanar, Las Anonas, El Pino, San Luis, Santa Rita, Contreras, Concepcion Pinula, El Sombrerito, La Primavera, El Zapote, El Colorado ( 1/2), Joya de los Cedros, El Socorro / San Shin, El Carmen, Rio Frio, Cruz Alta and Las Nubes.

Adjacent Municipalities are in the north of Palencia, Guatemala City to the northwest, Santa Catarina Pinula in the west and Fraijanes in the southwest. In the East San José del Golfo is adjacent to the neighboring department of El Progreso Mataquescuintla, south to Santa Rosa de Lima ( Department of Santa Rosa).

The town of San José Pinula emerged from an estate of the Jesuits during the colonial period. By 1886, he was a rural community to the municipality of Santa Catarina Pinula.
