San Mamés Stadium (2013)

The Estadio de San Mames is a football stadium in Bilbao. It is since 2013, the new home of the Spanish side Athletic Bilbao and replaces the San Mames of 1913, which was demolished for new construction.

Planning

Three tribunes of the new stadium were built next to the old San Mames according to schedule. Then the old San Mames was demolished to build on the same spot the missing fourth grandstand. The stadium capacity is 53,332 spectators, but can be expanded to 58,000. International has a capacity of 50,000 spectators is available.

History

The construction project was decided in 2006. The groundbreaking ceremony was on 26 May 2010 in the presence, among others the Basque Prime Minister Patxi López and the Mayor of Bilbao Iñaki Azkuna.

Data

The cost of stadium construction is expected to amount to around 211 million euros. They are spread over several donors; are also common owners of the stadium. The club Athletic Bilbao controls just as much as the Basque Government, the Provincial Council of Bizkaia Bilbao Bizkaia Kutxa and Sparkasse ( BBK) 50 million Euros for the construction added. The city of Bilbao is contributing 12 million euros.
