San Martín Palace

The Palacio San Martín is a building in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires. It is located in Plaza San Martín in the Retiro district.

Description

The Palacio in the Beaux-Arts style, was designed by the architect Alejandro Christophersen for Mercedes Castellanos de Anchorena. After four years of construction, it was completed in 1909. 1936 the federal government acquired the building and used it until 1993 when the State Department. Today it is used by the Ministry for receptions.

First, the building was known by his owner as Palacio Anchorena. Today the name is reminiscent of the national hero José de San Martín. The Palacio houses many works of art of Argentine and American artists, including Antonio Berni, Pablo Curatella Manes, Lino Enea Spilimbergo and Roberto Matta.
