San Vicente del Caguán

San Vicente del Caguán is a town with 51,000 inhabitants in the northwestern Colombian province of Caquetá.

From 1998 to 2001 the city was the administrative center of the so-called Zona de despeje, the demilitarized zone, and was managed by the guerrilla organization FARC autonomous.

Numerous attacks by the FARC and paramilitaries mark everyday life. Thousands of residents flee per year, mainly in the provincial capital of Florencia.

Even the paved road connection from Florencia to San Vicente del Caguán is the target of numerous attacks, although the Colombian armed forces are present with strong security forces.
