San Zan Degola

San Zan degola, Italian San Giovanni Decollato, is a church in Venice. It is located between Campo San Giacomo dall'Orio and the Fondaco dei Turchi in the Santa Croce district.

Patron of the church is John the Baptist ( Venetian Zan degola = John the Beheaded, it Decollato San Giovanni. ). The building is one of the few examples largely preserved Venetian- Byzantine architecture in the lagoon city.

History

The origins of the church date back to various sources in the 8th to 10th centuries, it is one of the oldest churches in Venice at all. Since 1007 she was the parish church of their neighborhood. The facade dates from the 16th century. It was funded by foundations of the Venier family, near had a palace. Despite some renovations in the past centuries it has maintained its original look largely. During the occupation of the city by the troops of Napoleon it served as a warehouse, causing the ancient floor and some of the ancient columns have been damaged in Greek marble, with capitals from the 11th century.

In the old church wall frescoes have been discovered in recent years that previously could not be dated securely.
