Sâncel

Sâncel or Sîncel ( Simtschal German, Hungarian Szancsal ) is a town in Alba county in Transylvania, Romania.

The place is also known as the Hungarian names Oláhszancsal and Böszörményszancsal.

Geographical location

The municipality is located in southwestern Sâncel of the Transylvanian Basin, at the Târnava Mica ( Small Kokel ). ( Judetean drum ) on the railway line Blaj - Praid and the county road DJ 107 the location is situated about 3 kilometers north of Blaj ( Blasendorf ); the county capital Alba Iulia ( Charles Castle ) is located approximately 43 kilometers southwest of Sâncel away.

History

The place Sâncel was first documented in 1252 ( according to different data) under the name Terra Zonchel, or 1300. 1347 has witnessed the name Sâmcel. After 1461 the place was a Romanian Nationals village with Romanian and Hungarian population and belonged to the domain Langenthal in the county small - Kokelburg. Since 1854, the city under the name Sâncel is known.

The highest population of the church today - and at the same time the Romanians - in 1956 determined. The highest population of Germans ( 29) in 1880, of Hungary ( 170), 1900, and the Roma ( 243) 2002 registered.
