Sanctuary Records Group

Sanctuary Records is a British record label that specializes in Metal. Since June 2007, it is part of the Universal Music Group, before that it was the largest independent label in Britain.

In 2013, Sanctuary is taken for 50 million euros from the BMG Rights Management.

History

The label was founded in 1979 by Rod Smallwood and Andy Taylor, who discovered in a London pub, Iron Maiden and put under contract. This contract marks the founding of the label, whose name derives from the Iron Maiden song Sanctuary. With Iron Maiden also the label gained notoriety and was able to provide some very long under contract, including Europe and Uriah Heep before all young and hopeful, but also older bands. Since most of the bands had their breakthroughs only during her time at the label, it quickly became a popular label for metal bands. In June 2007, the label for 44.5 million British pounds, was sold to Universal Music Group.
