Sandeep Bhagwati

Sandeep Bhagwati ( born June 4, 1963 in Bombay, now Mumbai, India) is a composer, artist, curator and writer. Born the son of a German mother and an Indian father in Mumbai, Bhagwati grew from the age of 5 in Germany. He lives and works in Montreal and Quebec City in Canada.

Training

Bhagwati attended from 1976 to 1982 the Gymnasium Athenaeum in Stade, where he took his Abitur. Then he studied from 1984 to 1987 at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, the Munich Music Academy with teachers such as Rupert Huber, Boguslaw Schaeffer and Killmayer and took classes with Hans- Jürgen von Bose, Edison Denisov, Brian Ferneyhough and Tristan Murail. His training in computer music, he received a one-year study at IRCAM / Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris.

Work

Sandeep Bhagwati wrote many musical works that are performed throughout the world. His artistic oeuvre is thereby crossed several disciplines and genres: it is dedicated to both the classical work as a composer, as well as the exploration of new forms of performative using electronic media and working in the multimedia performance and installation area. He also published theoretical texts on the current situation of the arts and written broadcasting series for various public radio stations. In 1991 he was co-founder of the Munich A • DEvantgarde Festival, which he directed until 1995. Since then he has designed several festivals. The theoretical and artistic approaches to the music cultures of Asia is a major focus of his work. An example of this is his opera Ramanujan, which premiered at the Munich Biennale in 1998, as well as workshops with the Ensemble Modern and Indian musicians in 2002-2003.

Teaching

From 2000-2003 he was professor of composition at the Musikhochschule Karlsruhe. Since 2006 he has held the Canada Research Chair in Inter -X Art Practice and Theory at the Faculty of Fine Arts at Concordia University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Prizes and awards

His work has been honored with numerous awards and scholarships, including with the European Composition Prize of the Academy of Arts in Berlin and the Ernst von Siemens Foundation. From 1995-98 he was a composer at IRCAM in Paris, guest composer at Royaumont, at the ZKM Karlsruhe, the IEM Graz (Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics) and the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn; 2004/2005 he was a fellow of the International Künstlerhaus Villa Concordia in Bamberg.
