Sandefjord Museum

Sandefjord Museene (official name Commander Christen Christensen's Whaling Museum, also called Whaling Museum Sandefjord or Hvalfangstmuseet ) located in Sandefjord, Norway, and was inaugurated in 1917 as a gift by Lars Christensen on the town of Sandefjord.

When it opened in 1917, the museum building was one of the first built as a museum building in Norway. Lars Christensen had two main goals when he opened the Museum: To inform the public about the Antarctic and its fauna and report on whaling and the whaling industry.

Today is the goal of the museum to be central in the presentation of a large amount of materials related to the history of whaling and the ecology of whales and their habitat.

The museum also serves as the host of international conferences on whaling and whales, the last one was held in September 2005.

The Southern Actor is a restored whaler, which was built in 1950 and today serves as a museum ship.
