History

Due to strong currents and dangerous sandbanks is the part of the Baltic Sea Sandhammaren especially dangerous with thousands wrecks at the same time also the largest ship graveyard in the country.

A makeshift beacon of coal has to run from July 1831 to April 1832. The Swedish Parliament approved in 1859 the appropriations for the Leuchtturmbau at Sandhammaren. 1861 began the construction of the present lighthouse, which was inaugurated on 10 October 1862. In addition, a structurally identical Another lighthouse was built until 1863. It originated as a twin signal, what confusion with other lighthouses of the maritime area, which should prevent from Bornholm and Christiansoe.

Because the ground was very sandy because of the large sand dunes at the site, the construction of lighthouses had not come in massive construction in question. The designer Nils Gustaf of Heidenstam therefore created two lattice towers from standard metal braces. In the middle there is a staircase tube with spiral staircase. Towers of this concept came after at other sites to use. The lighthouse was operated using fire beet oil lamps. In 1887 an oil lamp was used.

After 1891, the lens was replaced with a rotating belt 1400 mm lens in the southern tower, you could dispense with the twin signal, because now each tower a separate identifier could be assigned. Therefore, in 1891 the operation of the more northerly of the two lighthouses has been set. This tower was dismantled and rebuilt in 1904 Pite Rönnskär in northern Sweden back in 1905.

After the lighthouse in 1895 received a signal cannon and a foghorn, 1902, the kerosene lamp was replaced by a gas lamp. Since 1942, beacon and foghorn are electrically operated. 1950 they built a battery backup power. The operation of the lighthouse was automated in 1971 in several steps. 1979 left the last lighthouse keeper of the tower. Today, the tower of Norrköping is remotely controlled. He wears the international number C2460, the ARLHS number SWE -055 and the Swedish number 654,600th
