Sándor Soproni

Sándor Soproni ( born November 21, 1926 in Szentendre, Hungary, † November 10, 1995 in Budapest) was a Hungarian provincial Roman archaeologist who was known by important discoveries and excavations for pre-and early history of his native land and basic works on the late Roman military buildings and wrote to the ancient frontier defense of Pannonia. Soproni was one of the greatest archaeologists of his field in Hungary.

Life

After completing his schooling attended Sándor Soproni 1946 to 1951, the University of Budapest. Following his university degree and the doctorate, he was from 1951 to 1961 director of the newly founded Károly Ferenczy Museum, Szentendre and put the local lapidary with the stone monuments from the Roman camp village and the castle of Szentendre. He also took care of excavations, which add to our collections, exhibitions conceived and was also responsible for advertising its institution in addition to the organization of scientific presentations. Between 1961 and 1975 he was employed at the Archaeological Institute of the Hungarian National Museum in Budapest, before he was promoted in 1975 to Director of Central Archaeological Library. He taught both at the Budapest and at the University of Szeged and was a member of the Austrian and the German Archaeological Institute.

Performance

An important Sopronis of excavations took place at Budakalász - Luppa csárda between Szentendre and Budapest, 1952-1961. This Soproni uncovered 439 tombs of the Copper Age Péceler culture. In grave 177 has become the world-famous after its publication clay model of a car was discovered. During this time - at Luppa csárda also in 1934 exposed the late Roman residential and watchtower was - his gaze began on the scientific study of Roman border fortifications between Esztergom ( Solva ) and Szentendre ( Ulcisia Castra) to be addressed. He began to commit the former Roman border area in northern Hungary several times. He identified several ancient remains of buildings in the area and carried out excavations at the fort so Visegrad Sibrik on fortlet Pilismarót - Malompatak and the Burgus Leányfalu. He also looked at various points watchtower. He undertook the first research on late Roman fort Alsóhetény and worked on the Danube bridgehead Bölcske since the beginning of the investigation. The local discoveries with their rich inscription stones are among the most important Roman archaeological complexes of Pannonia in recent decades. In addition to the Limes Soproni research focused on the epigraphy of Roman inscriptions as geographical source. Another main topic was the investigation of the Limes Sarmatiae, a large, late Roman Wall Systems in the Great Hungarian Plain, which was then built in Barbaricum.

Sándor Soproni wrote not only for the scientific community, but also wrote popular science books that have been well received in the German-speaking public. On 7 October 1998 was held in Bölcske a memorial conference for Soproni with lectures instead.

The Lapidary of Bölcske with the salvaged at Bölcske from the Danube altars bears the name of Sándor Soproni ( Dr. Sándor Soproni Római Kori Kotar ).
