St. Aegyd am Neuwalde (also Saint Aegyd am Neuwalde ) is an Austrian market town in the district of Lilienfeld in Lower Austria with 2017 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013).

St. Aegyd am Neuwalde is in the Most district in Lower Austria. The area of ​​the municipality covers 184.56 km ². 87.61 % of the area is forested. It is thus one of the most forested communities in Central Europe.

History

In ancient times, the area was part of the province of Noricum. In the core Austrian state of Lower Austria lying the place told the eventful history of Austria.

Traces have been around from the time of the Celts and later the Slavs. An upheaval took place in the 18th and 19th century, began as a first industrialization. At that time, many foreign skilled workers came into the upper Traisental. The forestry needed manpower. Thus, a closed group of Protestants came from the Salzkammergut to St. Aegyd. Therefore, the proportion of Protestants at 12.4 % still above the Austrian average.

From November 2, 1944 to April 1, 1945, there were in St. Aegyd a KZ subcamp. Up to 300 prisoners were used here as forced laborers for warehouse construction, automotive engine manufacturing and road construction.

Population Development

According to the results of the 2001 census, there were 2,344 inhabitants. In 1991, the market town of 2,518 inhabitants in 1981 and 2,887 in 1971, 3,188 inhabitants.

The council has 21 seats, mayor of the municipality is Rudolf pepper, chief officer Hannes Gonaus.

In the municipal elections of 2005, the SPÖ and the ÖVP reached 12 9 mandates. In the municipal elections of 2010, the People's Party lost two seats to the SPÖ.

Tourism
