Geographical location

The market is St. Paul in the Lavant valley near the confluence of the Granitzbachs in the Lavant. A large part of the municipality is located in Granitztal and at the foothills of the Saualpe.

History

From the Roman period ( province of Noricum ) two dedications for the Celtic god Latobius were found. The first documentary mention of the place as villula Brugga comes from a document from the year 1091: Count Engelbert of Spanheim donated instead of a castle Lavant a Benedictine monastery in an already existing St. Paul's Church. Benedictine

The Benedictine Abbey of St. Paul, founded in 1091 is a castle that served the dukes of Carinthia as ancestral castle. The oil Bruendl

Dietrich von Spanheim (1253-1303), from the house of the founder of the Benedictine monastery of St. Paul, lived as a hermit in a cave in the woods north of St. John mountain.
