Sant Joan les Fonts

Sant Joan les Fonts is a Catalan municipality in the province of Girona, northeastern Spain. It is located in the comarca of Garrotxa.

Location

Sant Joan les Fonts is set amongst the volcanic landscape of the Parc Natural de la Zona de la Garrotxa Volcanic on Fluvia.

History

The center was built in the 9th century. However, most buildings were in 1427 and 1428 destroyed by earthquakes.

Attractions

  • The former monastery of Sant Joan de les Fonts Monestir with the three-nave Romanesque church was consecrated in 1981 declared a National Heritage Site.
  • The Fluvia is spanned by a medieval bridge. It consists of volcanic rock and is mentioned in a document from 1247.
  • The Estada de Juvinyà is a fortified building dating from the 12th century.
