Sant Lluís

Sant Lluís (Spanish San Luis ) is one of eight independent municipalities of the Spanish Balearic island of Menorca and is located in the southeast of the island, about 6 km from the island's capital, Mahon.

The official languages ​​are Catalan and Spanish ( Castilian). The spoken on the island Catalan dialect is called Menorquí.

History

On April 18th 1756 a Easter Sunday, landed on the beach of Santandría around twelve thousand French soldiers accompanied by a mighty fleet of Admiral Galissonnière, which began with the military siege of the castle of San Felipe and under the leadership of Marshal Duc de Richelieu with surrender of Great Britain ended. Already on June 29, 1756 signed the Englishman the surrender treaty.

On January 8, 1762 French jurisdiction authorized the French governor of the island, Comte de Lannion to build a settlement on the territory of the historic de la Garriga Binifadet. The place got its name in honor of King Lluís XV. (France) and was structured in a typical straight French urbanism style during the brief French rule in Menorca (1756-1763 ).

Sant Lluís in 1904 was declared an independent village, up to this point was Sant Lluis under the administration of the capital Mahon.

The municipality of Sant Lluís with 7509 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013) include the districts: Alcalfar, S'Algar, Biniancolla Binibèquer Nou, Binibèquer Vell, Binissafúller -Platja, Binissafúller Roters, Cap d' en Font, Pou Nou Consell, Punta Prima, Son Remei Son Ganxo, Torret and S'Ullastrar.

Attractions

  • Església de Sant Lluís, a church in neo-classical style. Built to the designs of French engineer and architect Antoine d' Allemand ( 1679-1760 ). The facade has a gabled, with the arms of France, and a portico with three arches.
  • El Moli de Dalt, wind mill from the early days of the town in 1672, was restored in 1987.
  • El molí de Baix, windmill from 1767, a part of this mill was renovated in 1998 to the youth center.
  • Talaiot de Binisafullet, prehistoric settlement from the period 15th and 2nd centuries BC
