Santa Catarina (ship)

The Santa Catarina was a Portuguese merchant ship.

On February 25, 1603, the carrack was applied in the Strait of Singapore ships of the Dutch East India Company. The carrack was about 1500 ton big and next to 650 men and 100 women were as charge Chinese silk and porcelain on board. But this silk brought in the Netherlands a pure sales revenue of 2.2 million guilders and made the Admiral Jacob van Heemskerk to a wealthy man. The total win amount is nearly 34 tonnes of gold, and after deduction of all losses, expenses, and other expenses, the company a profit of 450,000 guilders, the sailors 123 380 guilders and van Heemskerk 31,500 guilders.

A given to this case in order legal opinion was the occasion for Hugo Grotius font "Mare Liberum ".
