Santa Cecília de Montserrat

Santa Cecília (also Santa Cecília de Montserrat ) is a Romanesque church in the mountains of Montserrat, the hinterland of the Catalan capital of Barcelona in Spain, which was built in the 11th century. It was declared a historic monument ( Bien de Interès Cultural ).

History

Already 945 a monastery was at the same place by the monk Cesarius, who was first abbot, was founded. The first church was built from 957. In the 11th century a new church was built and of St. Cecilia, dedicated to Saint Peter and the Blessed Virgin Mary.

From the monastery only the church has been preserved, a basilica with three naves, the central nave is longer than the two side aisles. The three semicircular apses are decorated with blind arches and Lombard bands. The monastery was dissolved in the 14th century, and in 1539 the buildings were the Monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat assumed.

After the destruction during the Napoleonic Wars, the church was restored in 1862 under the architect Francisco de Paula del Villar y Carmona ( 1860-1927 ). Also found from 1928 to 1930 under Josep Puig i Cadafalch restoration work place.
