Santa Eulalia del Rio

Santa Eulalia (Spanish Santa Eulalia del Río ) is a city in the east of the island of Ibiza. The south of the city into the sea which opens only river of the island dominating the landscape of the community, and until the 18th century, important for irrigation and the operation of mills.

History

Under Arab rule was the area Xarc and got only after the Catalan conquest of the name Santa Eulalia. The name is borrowed from the river, which had the name before so. Today, Santa Eulalia is a vibrant city with a mile- long beach promenade, especially in summer. Great and famous is the exclusive marina. This pulls in contrast to, for example, Sant Antoni rather the more refined audience in the city.

Traffic

The population growth is quite high since the beginning of mass tourism in the 1960s. It was from 2001 to 2008 an average of 6.3% annually. The population has doubled accordingly in the past 20 years.

Development of the Population:

While population growth was driven initially by the influx of workers from the Spanish mainland, the population has been increasing since the 1990s, mainly due to the high influx of foreigners. As a result, the proportion of locals has declined in recent decades more and more. Far fewer than half of the residents ( 41.8 %) is a native of the Balearic Islands and only 14.9% of Santa Eulalia.

The population is male to 51.6% and 48.4 % female.

A resident of Santa Eulalia is called eularienc or eularienca in Catalan, santaeulariense in Spanish.

The proportion of foreigners with 25.4% (2008, only main residence ) is very high and still rising. In 1991 lived at 5.7 %, significantly less foreigners in Santa Eulalia. However, the origin of the foreigner is different compared to the other communities Ibiza: There are mainly Western European residents ( 15.8%), most of them German (5.1%) and British ( 3.5%). The proportion of foreign workers is lower than in the rest of Ibiza. 27.5 % of the population is foreign-born.
