Template: Infobox city in Portugal / maintenance / management location is empty Template: Infobox city in Portugal / Maintenance / Web page is blank Santa Marta de Penaguião is a small town ( Vila ) and a circle ( concelho ) in Portugal with 7324 inhabitants ( as of June 30 2011). It belongs to the Upper Douro Valley, the first since 1756 origin protected wine region in the world. Since 2001 she is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

History

Findings and excavations indicate a settlement of the area at least since the Castro culture. The settled here Romans left traces, including a kiln. King Sancho I granted the town city rights in 1202 ( Foral ), the King Manuel I in 1519 renewed.

Culture and sights

Architectural monuments include various historic public buildings, stone fountains and religious buildings, including going back to a first church in the 15th century parish church Igreja de São Miguel de Paroquial Lobrigos (also Igreja de São Miguel). The historic center as a whole is also a listed building.

Several trails lead past villages, Miradouros, wineries, old mills and a Roman oven.

Santa Marta de Penaguião is the seat of the homonymous district. The neighboring districts are (clockwise starting from the north ): Vila Real, Peso da Régua and Amarante.
