Image description

The Enthroned Madonna of Cimabue is a large format board with a roof-like frame shape. It shows an enthroned Madonna with the infant Jesus, who is stood by angels. A background is absent; the people standing in front of a gold background, which was often used between the 5th and the 15th century as a symbol of the divine region and the figures and objects surrounding the image here.

The picture is so composed, that the throne of construction results in a balanced unit with the picture frame. In the center stands the Mother of God, which is shown in meaning perspective, ie according to their salvation-historical significance of the Mother of God is greater than the figures shown around them. The figures tend to be framed in symmetrical turns their heads. Apart from the lateral figures on Bildfuß they take on no eye contact with the enthroned Madonna. The throne under the feet of the Madonna opens into a bottomless pit. Due to the arrangement of the figures seem to float. The face of the Madonna is still lacking an individual characterization. The painting is still characterized by a given face and gestures formula which corresponds to the traditional Byzantine art.
