Santander Department

The Departamento de Santander is a department in northeastern Colombia. It is surrounded by the departments de Cesar in the North, Norte de Santander in the north- east, in the south of Boyacá, Antioquia and Bolívar in the west to the northwest.

Agriculture is one of the mainstays of the region. There are grown tobacco, cacao, pineapple, yuca, rice, coffee and fruit. In the north of the province outweighs the livestock. In Barrancabermeja is the most important petroleum refinery in Colombia. Other industries include the beverage and food industry, tool manufacture, cigarette factories and cement production.

The biggest attractions are the Cañón del Chicamocha, San Gil ( Capital turistica de Colombia ) and the National Monument barichara, a very well-preserved colonial village, which is considered one of the most beautiful in Colombia.

Geography

Santander is located between the Central and the Eastern Cordillera. The western border of the state forms the Magdalena River with the port of Barrancabermeja. In the Sierra Nevada del Cocuy are the highest elevations above 5000 m altitude. The Cañón del Chicamocha Santander has one of the deepest gorges in Latin America.

Population

The densest population is located in the catchment area of ​​the provincial capital Bucaramanga; the metropolitan area has more than one million inhabitants; so live about 50 % of the inhabitants of Santander in the capital area.
