Santes Pagnino
Santi Pagnini (* 1470 in Lucca, † 1541 in Rome ) was an Italian Bible scholar in the Renaissance.
Life
Pagnini joined the Dominican Order and acquired by his knowledge of the oriental languages such prestige that Pope Leo X invited him to teach in Rome. About 1518 he completed a Latin translation of the Bible from Hebrew and Greek. It was published in 1527 in Lyon and later ( 1541) in Cologne. It was the first translation that divided the Bible into separate verses. Pagnini also put together a Hebrew grammar and a dictionary that underwent numerous editions.
