Sântimbru, Alba

Santimbru or Sîntimbru ( Emerichsdorf German, Hungarian Marosszentimre ) is a town in Alba county in Transylvania, Romania.

The place is also known by the German names Emrichsdorf or St. Emerich and the Hungarian Szentimre.

Geographical location

The community Santimbru lies in the west of Transylvania, on the right bank of the Mures ( Mures ) in the center of the circle Alba. At the railway Alba Iulia - Targu Mures and the European route E 81, the place is eight kilometers north of the county capital Alba Iulia ( Karlburg ) away.

History

The place Santimbru, a former Transylvanian - Saxon settlement - inhabited since the 15th century by Romanians and Hungarians - was the first time ( according to different data) in 1238 under the name of Villa Sancti Emerici ( Szent Imre ), or 1270 under Sancto Emerico ( 1332 under Zentemereh 1365 under villa Zentemeryh, 1808 szint Imbru, 1850 szint Imbru, St. Emeric, 1854 Szent- Imra ) mentioned in a document.

On March 18, 1442 it came to the territory of the municipality to fighting between the Turkish army under Mesid Begs and that of John Hunyadi. In this Hunyadi lost the battle also fell Ioan Iles ( Ioan cel Tanar ) - Hunyadi's brother - and Bishop George lépés.

The highest population of today's church was built in 1941 determined.
