Santo António da Serra is a comune ( freguesia ) in a circle ( concelho ) of Machico, in the northeast of the Portuguese island of Madeira. On 30 June 2011, the municipality had 1599 inhabitants ² on a plot of 8.6 km.

The municipality is located to another part, municipality of Santa Cruz, where it forms a more administratively community. It is there as well as out as Santo António Serra. As the only community in two circular areas it is so unique in the administrative divisions of Portugal dar.

History

Zarco, the new discoverers of Madeira, landed in 1419 in Machico. It was followed by the colonization of the area that ran from the coast reluctant interior of the island. From the early 16th century settlers were in present-day municipality down permanently. In the 17th century Santo António da Serra was a separate municipality.

In 1836, the municipality of Água de Pena was dissolved and Santo António da Serra affiliated. The communities were separated again in 1848, and 1852 arranged to some of the villages of Santo António da Serra Machico and Santa Cruz to the circle. This led to discontent among the inhabitants, whereupon in 1862 is still valid today borders the counties and municipalities of Machico and Santa Cruz have been established. Since then, the territory of the municipality of Santo António da Serra is conducted in two parts, which are divided between Machico and Santa Cruz.

In the 19th century, the Scottish doctor Robert Kalley settled here. He treated predominantly free the people of the community. However, he was trying to spread Protestantism. The population was, however, then as now strongly associated with Catholicism, and so it came to accusations. Some employees Kalleys were arrested then, and the doctor himself had to leave the island.

Culture, Sports and Attractions

Santo António da Serra is internationally known for its golf course.

The Capela de Nossa Senhora do Bom Caminho (English: Chapel of Our Lady of Good Way ) is a listed building.

Management

Santo António da Serra is a unique exception in the Administrative divisions of Portugal, as the community is located in two circles. At the end, it is recognized officially separated and executed in two independent community areas, each distinguished by the suffix of the circle.
