Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas Province

Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas is a province of the Republic of Ecuador. Its capital is Santo Domingo de los Colorados. The province has about 323,000 inhabitants ( 2007). The name derives from the capital and the indigenous people of the Tsáchila, called in Spanish and Colorado.

Geography

The province is located at the transition between the western slope of the Andes and the coastal region of Ecuador in the central northwestern Ecuador. The vegetation is dominated by tropical rain forests and former tropical rainforest areas that are today used for livestock as a banana or palm oil plantations.

It is bordered to the north and east by the province of Pichincha, north-west of Esmeraldas, on the west by Manabí, Los Ríos in the south and south-east by the province of Cotopaxi.

History

The province was established by a law adopted on 2 October 2007 and published on 6 October 2007, Journal of Laws Act. It is going from the previously belonging to the province of Pichincha Canton of Santo Domingo de Colorado. The borders are not yet completely defined, since the area around the settlement of La Concordia Santo Domingo and the province of Esmeraldas is claimed. According Provinzialisierungsgesetz convened by the President to decide a referendum on the membership of the territory. La Concordia was early November 2007, appointed by the National Congress on the State of the Province of Esmeraldas in a controversial decision.

The canton of Santo Domingo de los Colorados was established in 1967 as the westernmost canton of the province of Pichincha.

Policy

The province is currently managed by an inter-institutional transition Commission, which consists of the mayor of the capital, which has been appointed by the President, governor of the province, the governor of the Tsáchila and the Prefect of the province of Pichincha or its representatives. On March 16, 2008, a prefect, and the province of Parliament were elected. Choosing Prefect won Édgar Benítez PAÍS, the party of the President of Ecuador. Mayor of the capital is Kléber Paz y Miño from the Partido Social Cristiano.
