São Carlos [ sɐu̯mcar̯lus ] (Portuguese for Saint Charles ) is a city in the state of São Paulo in Brazil. There, 218 702 (2006 ) People living in an area of 1,141 km ².

São Carlos is centrally located about 230 km from the city of São Paulo, state of São Paulo. Due to its location at an altitude of about 856 meters, it has a mild climate.

São Carlos was founded in 1857 during the coffee boom of Antônio Carlos de Arruda Botelho. In the surrounding area is now cultivated mainly sugar cane instead of coffee, the city itself, however, is home to industrial companies, including works by Volkswagen, Faber -Castell, Electrolux, Husqvarna and Tecumseh. The city is the seat of the Universidade Federal de São Carlos ( UFSCar ), two campus of the University of São Paulo (USP) and other universities so that São Carlos has the character of a student city.
