São Gião is a comune ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district of Oliveira do Hospital. 429 inhabitants live in it (as at 30 June 2011).

History

The place belonged to the municipality Penalva de Alva, until he was an independent municipality in 1562, but still belonged to the circle Penalva. As of 1840, the village belonged to the circle Sandomil until it was dissolved in 1855. By 1898 São Gião was assigned to the district Seia to since then to belong to Oliveira do Hospital.

Culture and sights

In addition to three other chapels, the main church Igreja de São Paroquial Gião is (also Igreja Matriz ) under monument protection. Built from 1756, one-nave Baroque church has gilded wooden altar ( Talha dourada ) and baroque altarpieces, and displays rococo elements, inter alia, at the ceiling paintings
