Infrastructure

With around 20 km away island capital São Filipe and Mosteiros, the second largest town on the island of São Jorge is connected by a good road. Several times a day (not on Sundays or public holidays), the village can be reached with the typical for the Cape Verde Aluguer buses. But it does not operate according to a fixed timetable, but run from as soon as enough passengers have arrived.

In São Jorge there is a school and shops for daily needs, but no accommodations for tourists.

Attractions

The beach of Ponta da Salina with his coarse, black sand near the village is one of the few places on Fogo, where you can swim in the sea. He is a popular destination of the inhabitants of São Filipe. It is a natural harbor on a bay of basalt, which is used only by a few fishermen with small boats. On bay several rock formations in bizarre shapes collect, and a particularly distinctive, arch -shaped rock serves as a natural diving platform. At not too rough seas and not too much wind here bathing is possible.

On the road that leads from the village to the beach, an old and surrounded by a wall cemetery is worth seeing. Most of the graves are kept remarkably simple and consist of little more than a wooden cross with no name. The few elaborate tombs make this a striking contrast.
