São Miguel do Araguaia

São Miguel do Araguaia is the northernmost municipality in the Brazilian state of Goiás in the mesoregion Northwest Goiás and in the same micro-region. It is located northwest of the Brazilian capital Brasília and almost 500 km north- northwest of the capital Goiânia.

The city was named in honor of the Archangel Michael, the patron saint of the city and its location at the Rio Araguaia.

Economically significant are in Sao Miguel do Araguaia mainly livestock, agriculture and during the dry season (June, July), the tourism in the place Luiz Alves along the banks of the river Araguaia ( about 50 km west of São Miguel). During this time, the population of Luiz Alves increased from just under a thousand people on up to 30,000 and the Rio Araguaia is due to the low water level miles of white sandy beaches freely. Luiz Alvez has a natural slope for small aircraft and is the starting point for boats to visit the downstream ( north ) located Ilha do Bananal, the world's largest river island. Is located at the northern end of the national park Parque Nacional do Araguaia and in the south a sanctuary of Karajá and Javaés Indians.

About 15 km upstream from Luiz Alvez and south of the river Crixás - Açu is the national nature reserve Meandros do Rio Araguaia.
