São Tomé and Príncipe constitutional referendum, 1990

The constitutional referendum in São Tomé and Príncipe in 1990 was held on 22 August 1990, and marks the transition of the West African island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe for electoral democracy and the multiparty system. To vote was a new constitution that since the country's independence established in 1975 wrote both the multi-party democracy for the first time as well as the limited term of office of the President to two terms.

95.3 % of voters approved the introduction of the new constitution, and so prepared the way for the parliamentary elections on 20 January 1991 the first free elections in the country at all.
