São Tomé and Príncipe presidential election, 1991

The presidential elections in São Tomé and Príncipe in 1991 took place on 3 March 1991 and were the first presidential elections in São Tomé and Príncipe at all, because by then the President of the country had been determined by the National Assembly. A constitutional referendum in the previous year had laid the groundwork for a democratization of the country and this election. Ultimately, however, turned out to only one candidate, Miguel Trovoada, for election, the elected unopposed and was sworn in on 3 April 1991 as the second President of São Tomé and Principe.

Candidates

Originally, three candidates declared their intention to stand for election:

  • Miguel Trovoada, former Prime Minister, who ran as an Independent, but the support of the parties Partido de Convergència Democrática de - Grupa reflexão (PCD -GR) and Coligação Democrática because Oposição ( CODO ) possessed.
  • Monso dos Santos of the Frente Democrática Cristã (FDC )

And

  • Guadalupe de Ceita, an independent candidate.

Manuel Pinto da Costa, president since independence São Tomé and Príncipe of 1975, did not campaign and declared his retirement from politics. The former ruling party, Movimento de São Tomé e Príncipe de Libertação had not drawn up a candidate of their own.

A month before the election attracted both Monso dos Santos and Guadalupe de Ceita back her candidacy, which Trovoada remained as the only candidate. The turnout in spite of the lack of alternative at 60.0 %.
